Ondrej Rudavsky Biography
Ondrej Rudavsky is a renaissance artist in the truest sense of the word. He works in a multitude of media outlets (film, animation, photography, video installation, digital art, illustration, graphic design, painting, jewelry, sculpture, costume design and music) all of which allow him to create a universe of captivating and compelling subconscious worlds that are both hypnotic and dream-like.
Rudavsky was born in Bratislava, Slovakia, into a family of three generations of artists. His father, Andrej, is a renowned sculptor and painter; his mother, Maria, weaves wall hangings of mystical proportions and is also a ceramicist; his sister, Zuzana, is a both a sculptor and creator of fine jewelry; and his grandparents Sebastian and Alzbeta were folk artists from Carna Gora-in Poland.
When Rudavsky was 13, he began his journey as a filmmaker, inspired by directors like Melies, Bunuel, Zeman, Fellini, and artists like Bosch, Bruegel, and European surreal artists. After studying fine art and graphic at the Collage of art in Bratislava, he went on to study film animation at the University of art in Prague. Then, in 1986, Rudavsky immigrated to America.
Not long after he arrived, Gallery K in Washington D.C. gave him his first U.S. one-man show consisting of a collection of his surreal drawings entitled “MEMORIES”. This exhibit introduced him to the East Coast art community, specifically the illustrator, Peter Sis, who was so taken by Rudavsky’s work that he introduced him and his work to The New York Times. Rudavsky was repeatedly hired as an illustrator for the “ Book Review ” for many years.
In 1991, Robert Lee Morris, owner of Art Wear Gallery, exhibited Rudavsky’s jewelry. Through this exposure, his jewelry showed at New York’s Sofa, as well as the Helen Drut Gallery,
Jewel’s work collection and the Susan Grant Lewin collection, Rudavsky began his music video career with a bang in 1992 after he met Moby, who enlisted him to create a film projection to be shown during his live concert. Moby then hire him to direct and animate his first music video, GO. Rudasky’s work with Moby enabled him to gain exposure in the music scene and create additional music videos for Los Lobos and Dead Can Dance among others. These videos earned him an MTV Award, Golden Eagle Award, Monitor Award, and a Grammy nomination. Rudavsky quickly became a well-respected director in the international music video arena.
In 1997, Rudavsky created video installation “ Connections” that was chosen to represent the Slovak Republic at the world’s most prestigious art show, the XLVII Venice Biennial, in Venice, Italy and again in 1999 at the EXPO in Hanover. Germany. The installation later traveled to the Museum of Arizona and the Los Angeles International Biennial, which later prompted Rudavsky to experiment with digital art. He quickly became included in important art exhibitions around the world.
But it doesn’t end there. Rudavsky has also written, directed and produced numerous short films, many of which have been shown at the Museum of Modern Art/New York, Sundance Film Festival, New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center, Bronx Museum, Hiroshima Film Festival, Woodstock, Annecy, Anima Mundy, Slamdance, Florida film festival and more. He also wrote, directed, animated, and produced a forty-minute animated film titled, “BEYOND INVISIBLE”, with the introduction delivered by actress Lisa Bonet. Rudavky also directed & animated more music art videos in Europe which garnered him two Aurel Awards for artists such as Muller and Kirschner. For the 2005 MTV awards in Florida, he created video art for an electronic panel that appeared on the stage during the performance of the group Yellowcard.
Rudavsky’s latest conquest is experimenting with high definition format, video sculptures, music, and 3D projections. He continues to travel between Los Angeles, New York and various European cities to contribute his talents to music videos, video installations and art.
